Mercedes 280 SL
Mercedes-Benz 280SL does not just describe one car. In fact there will be more confusion if the model is mentioned without other distinguishing factors because it has two other models which look and was made identical to each other. Usually, when people talk about a 280SL model, it is followed by the year it was introduced. The confusing factor is not really on the model as there is only one 280SL model. It is in the buying of the spare parts that a person is turned between the three models which are 230SL, 250SL and the 280SL. Each of which are identical to each other since they are using the model of chassis.
Since the chassis is some kind of a guideline because it is the basis as to how the engine should be positioned inside the hood, or how to make other important parts into a car, it can make cars really look like the same if the same chassis is used. And that’s the case for the three models. Although, owners of the cars as well as the mechanics are well-aware of their differences, in the eyes of the mere observers they are identical. And one can be confused to be the other.
The Mercedes 280SL (as well as the 230SL and 250SL) are also called the “pagoda” cars which is referred to the shape of the roof, hardtop; this means that the center of the roof is a bit lower than the sides just like the shape of the Pagoda in Japanese style. The shape was not really intended to look like a pagoda but to provide higher entry and exit, to have wider side windows as well as to increase the strength of the roof.
Mercedes-Benz 280SL has a 6-cylinder engine with a mechanical fuel injection system (Bosch), an overhead camshaft and an alloy valve cover. One of the most featured safety workaround is that the red light will be visible in the dashboard should the brake fluid runs very low. Also, to make the car lighter, all the moveable parts in the exterior are made up of an aluminum alloy, these parts include: trunk lid, the door and most importantly, the doors.
